2024 UEC Road European Championships receive UCI Climate Action Award
At the UCI Cycling for All & Sustainability Awards in Copenhagen, Denmark, the 2024 UEC Road European Championships were among the prize winners. Limburg 2024 received the UCI Climate Action Award, earning international recognition once again – after the AGF Certificate – for its sustainability plan, which consisted of 10 themes and 100 action points.
Last Friday, the UCI Cycling for All & Sustainability Awards were presented for the second time in Copenhagen, Denmark. The 2024 UEC Road European Championships, held in Limburg, Flanders from 11 to 15 September 2024, received the UCI Climate Action Award at the congress. Earlier, A Greener Future had already granted the organization an official AGF Certificate in the Improvers category, following a thorough screening and evaluation of the sustainability plan initiated by EventFlanders.
Tomas Van Den Spiegel, CEO of Flanders Classics: “This award is the result of many joint efforts. Rolling out an action plan based on 10 themes and more than 100 action points is only possible when all parties work together. The entire Flanders Classics team is proud of this achievement, which would not have been possible without the support of the Flemish Government, the Province of Limburg, the host cities Hasselt and Heusden-Zolder, and all other partners and suppliers involved in this project. The European Championships made a significant contribution to our sustainability strategy. We’ve made a commitment that we will continue to uphold in our future events.”

Sustainability plan
The sustainability plan of Limburg 2024 is now set to serve as a blueprint and marks a new step toward making sporting events more environmentally friendly in the future. Flanders Classics is also building on the legacy of the European Championships, with the plan already forming the foundation for the organization of events such as Omloop het Nieuwsblad and Tour of Flanders earlier this spring. Based on a baseline measurement conducted during the spring classics, we are working step by step toward our ambition of becoming climate neutral by 2035.
