Flanders Classics and the Dwars Door Vlaanderen organisation joined the select little group of WorldTour competitions last season. This status entailed that both parties had been looking for a better place on the UCI calendar, i.e. the Wednesday before the Ronde van Vlaanderen. Since all WorldTour teams are already present then in preparation for the Ronde, Dwars Door Vlaanderen wants to present an even stronger group of participants at the start.

Earlier this week, the news was announced to the world by the UCI. Flanders Classics and Dwars Door Vlaanderen officially managed to get their dream date: 3 days before the Ronde. In 2018, de West-Flemish spring classic will therefore take place on Wednesday 28 March. The organisation expressed their utmost satisfaction with this news.

“It is the place on the cycling calendar we have been aiming for for five years”, as Carlo Lambrecht tell Focus – WTV. “Of course, we will be working on our track as well, as we are not interested in becoming a copy of the Ronde van Vlaanderen. We will adjust our track to the standards of the teams. The most important thing is that we create our own track with its own identity.”

Among Flanders Classics too, nothing but contentment: “By moving Dwars Door Vlaanderen one week back, we now have three Flanders Classic WorldTour classics in one week”, says Wim van Herreweghe. “As from the first second of Ghent-Wevelgem to the final second of the Ronde van Vlaanderen, the eyes of all cycling enthusiasts from all over the world will be focused on Flanders. With this in mind, we will make this one giant cycling party starting from next season.”
